Our lab’s co-founder and faculty member, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Atalay, who completed both his MSc and PhD studies at the University of Manchester, has been awarded the Study UK Alumni Award in Science and Sustainability by British Council Türkiye. He was selected from among three finalists in recognition of his pioneering contributions that foster sustainable change and scientific innovation.
The award ceremony took place on 20 March 2025 at the British Consulate-General, jointly organized by British Council Türkiye and the UK Consulate.

“Assoc. Prof. Dr. Özgür Atalay is one of the leading experts in smart textiles and is widely recognized for his pioneering work in textile-based wearable electronics and soft robotics. His innovative projects, such as a knitted robotic glove designed for individuals with disabilities, have earned him multiple accolades, including a prestigious ERC Grant. He is the co-founder of a cutting-edge laboratory at Istanbul Technical University dedicated to soft robotics and wearable technologies. He also leads several major EU-funded projects, enhancing collaborations with reputable institutions across Europe.
Dr. Atalay has gained valuable experience in interdisciplinary environments focused on textile sensor integration. The collaborative and international academic environment of the University of Manchester broadened his research perspective, enhancing both his technical expertise and his passion for innovation in wearable electronics.
He remains committed to advancing fundamental science both in his home country and across Europe, with the ultimate goal of improving people’s lives through his research.”
